This estate in Chile make a fine Merlot and it expresses the fruit with aplomb as well as a plum. (Sorry about this but I must get a life.)  For those that didn’t get it Merlot is a grape that expresses itself with plumy fruit and this is no exception.

MARQUÉS DE CAZA AIRÉN 2008, Tierra de Castilla (Spain) 15.50
Here’s something you didn’t know……the white Airén grape is the world’s most planted variety……I didn’t anyway! This is a soft and attractive white with citrus and ripe pear flavours.

DOMAINE DE SAINT-LANNES 2008, Cotes de Gascogne 16.50
A fabulously pure, clean fruit flavour with, I think crisp green apples jumping from the glass. There is fresh acidity and a long clean, lively finish. Great stuff from south-west France.

SANTA RITA ‘GRAN HACIENA’ SAUVIGNON 2009, Lontué Valley 17.50
Chile are doing fabulous things and this great estate has been at the forefront of the transformation. This wine has fresh, herbaceous fruit flavours making this an extremely well-balanced wine. If thinking of a Spritza (spell-check was no help!) this makes it a great drink.

LA CALA VERMENTINO DI SARDEGNA 2007, Sella & Mosca (Italy) 17.95
With the Wine Market flooded with Sauvignon and Chardonnay it is nice to sink into the bone dry stylish wines from Italy at any level. This is a delightful easy white wine that is a fine bargain.

VOUVRAY 2007, Les Coteaux des Tuffiers 17.95
A good balance between sweetness and acidity making this a refreshing, clean, medium-dry white wine. A fine alternative for German drinkers.

LA FLOR DE PULENTA SAUVIGNON BLANC 2008, Mendoza (Argentina) 19.95
Fresh herbaceous citrusy flavours jump from the glass and hit you squarely between the nostril. This is a delicious flavoursome dry white wine that should be enjoyed by one and all.

INNOCENT BYSTANDER CHARDONNAY 2007, Victoria (Australia) 22.50
This is a cracker from some very well placed vineyards in the cool reaches of Victoria. There is a lovely citrus fruit balanced with fresh cream and a touch of lemon zest. Great stuff.

TIN POT HUT SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009, Marlborough (NZ) 23.95
The wine took its name from on old mustering hut in the remote hills between the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. What this actually has to do with anything I have no idea but the antipodeans always have to have a story with their wines. The wine is a pure example with depth and intensity with a pungent Sauvignon and a classy minerality that gives it lift.

MACON LUGNY ‘LES GENIEVRES’ 2008, Louis Latour 24.50
This could go down as one of the star buys of the list! The fruit and minerality stand out from the glass as the wine is vinified in stainless steel resulting in a pure, clean style of Macon.

CHABLIS 2008, Domaine Fourray 29.95
This has to be the perfect dinner white wine that almost goes with anything. The steely backbone gives the wine lift and refreshes the parts that other wines never reach and this is a classic example.

SANCERRE 2008, Domaine de Clairneaux 32.95 (Half Bottles: £15.50)
This is a clean, crisp wine with a tinge of grapefruit and a tangy herbaceous edge that finishes with an elegant classy finish. It is a stunning and classy dry white wine.

RULLY ‘MARIZIERES’ 2005, Domaine Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 39.95
Greatness in a glass! If white Burgundy is your thing then this is a must try wine. The Domaine consistently produce some of the finest wines in the village of Rully and this was a terrific vintage and great success.

COTES DU RHONE ‘CAPRICES D’ANTOINE’ 2005 Ogier 16.95
An intense, fruity Rhone style aged in barrels for 6 months.

FINCA LOS PRIMOS MALBEC 2008, Valentin Bianchi, San Rafael (Argentina) 16.95
Malbec is really starting to show its true potential these days and this is a pure example with clean curranty fruit and a fine structure that fills the mouth and offers excellent value.

SANTA RITA ‘GRAN HACIENDA’ MERLOT 2008, Lontue Valley 17.50

BARBERA D’ASTI ‘CEPPI STORICI’ 2007, Araldica (Italy) 18.95
We love this young fresh fruity Italian, it is not as muscular as the majestic stallion one would associate with a powerful rich Barolo, but more of a lean playful colt!

CLAIRAULT SHIRAZ 2008, Margaret river, Australia 19.95
Aromas of fruitcake prune and spice. Vibrant berry fruits flavours, balanced structure and delicate tannins. Silver medal winner of the 2009 decanter Wine awards .

LA FLOR DE PULENTA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2008, Mendoza (Argentina) 22.50
Argentina are finding fame with Malbec but we are ignoring that and going for this big, rich and all conquering Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a stunning wine and should be given a go.

BODEGAS LAN CRIANZA 2005, Rioja 23.95
This is a masculine wine with plenty of silky fruit balanced by a sweetness of the oak that results in a structured wine with a long lingering farewell that delivers exactly what good Rioja should.

DEVIL’S CORNER PINOT NOIR 2008, Tamar Ridge, Tasmania 27.95
The Tamar Ridge winery received the five star accolade from James Halliday and the cool climate of the western bank of the River Tamar is ideal for grapes like Pinot Noir. This is a medium- weight, cherry tinted, elegant silk bomb.

FLEURIE ‘CHATEAU DU FLEURIE’ 2007, Domaine Loron et Fils 29.50
A wonderful, rich, elegant bouquet, especially powerful and stylish.

CROZES HERMITAGE 2007, Domaine Les Chenets 29.95
There has been some very brave investment into this 12 hectare domaine and the results are starting to show spectacularly well. There is some very expensive new oak in the cellar and this rounds the wine off leaving the lucky drinker gagging for more.

CHATEAU LA TOUR ST BONNET 2005, Cru Bourgeois Medoc 35.50
This is a very well known Chateau from an outstanding vintage so life should not get much better. There is cassis, cherry and strawberry if you look hard enough and the structure and fine tannins make it a star.

CHATEAU LANESSAN 1996, Haut Medoc 39.50
Why not go for something really flash. This 1996 is from a very highly regarded Chateau and it is soft and silky with mature tannins and a genuine backbone of structure and length. Fabulous kit!
